Self-storage units and facilities differ somewhat, but all of them provide the same thing–extra space. Most of them are very economical, especially if the use will be short-term.

Most people think of self-storage as the rows and rows of units located in one central location. This is indeed the “traditional” type of self-storage. Units may range from smaller ones designed to hold one or two rooms of furniture; others may literally be large enough to accommodate the entire contents of a house.

Some people also choose to rent a car storage unit rather than leave a vehicle in “long-term” parking at an airport. The difference in the rental price of the unit and the parking rates is usually substantial enough to make renting the unit the more economical choice.

Using self-storage facilities and units has many advantages. Most facilities are well-maintained and very secure. Some places even allow people to live in an apartment or small dwelling on the premises for free in exchange for security and maintenance services.

Storage units are designed to hold things, but not people. Although there have been incidences where a unit was opened and it was discovered that someone had literally “set up housekeeping”, this is very rare, and in most cases, illegal. It can also be dangerous. So, remember, things, not people, in self-storage units.

Moving to rural areas are said to be the best place if you want to capitalize on all the amenities within your living spaces. Most people shy away from moving to rural areas because the population is at a minimum and there is hardly any type of entertainment or nightlife that is happening in these areas. Rural areas are usually peaceful and it is no doubt far away from everything that one will consider fun. Living in rural areas isn’t such a bad thing especially when you look at all that you can enjoy by starting a live here.
For one thing the real estate in rural areas is no doubt cheaper than what you may pay in other well-populated areas. You may find a 4-bedroom house in a rural area that would require you to pay only $500 each month to live there while a home with the same number of bedrooms in other urban areas will fetch for close to $1,800 and probably more.
Real estate aside, since rural areas offer the use of well water, it means that one may not be required to pay water rates or even see a water bill. Vegetables are cheap in these areas as well as rural areas are home to several farmers who sell their produce to villagers for at a cheap rate. In rural areas you can also convert your trash into soil for the garden as it’s easy for one to burn their non-toxic items. Life in rural areas also means going back to basics. You can consider installing a windmill so that you would not have to run up your bill to keep your home nice and breezy. States such as South Dakota are ideal for setting up a windmill since it is very windy.

Most homes do not have enough closets for storage. It’s pretty much a fact of life in all homes. Most homes, however, do have SOME closet space. Therefore, the best thing to do is to utilize that space as efficiently and thoroughly as possible.

The best way to accomplish this is by first cleaning out ALL available closet spaces, and get rid of ANYTHING that is more than a year old. This includes clothing, shoes, ANYTHING!

Once that is done, the homeowner is probably going to be pleasantly surprised to find that there is a lot more space than was previously thought. It is then only a matter of using all that available space in the best possible way.

Remember that a closet’s primary function is to store CLOTHING. Therefore, it if does not fall into the category of clothing, it probably needs to be put somewhere else. That alone is going to free up a lot of previously-occupied space.

But, where is the stuff that was once in the closet going to go? Somewhere else, of course.

Under the bed is one of the best places. There are storage containers designed specifically for this often-overlooked area. An investment in some of those, and the using of them once they have been bought, will be well worth the time and money.

There is even furniture that is designed to function both as furniture and storage space. Ottomans that are hollow on the inside, with a cushion that doubles as the access points are a good buy. There are even some beds that come with drawers built into the frame.

Shelving can be utilized for storage. If one does not wish for the contents of the shelves to be exposed, a pretty curtain can be draped over the front, or a decorative wardrobe screen can be positioned to hide them.

There would come a time when you would have to move from the apartment that you currently reside in. Moving out either as a self move or with an affordable apartment mover is always a much anticipated adventure. You have grown out of your old apartment; the walls seem to be closing in on you and even worst the landlord keeps raising the rent each month for no apparent reason. On top of it all you may be facing a problem with your landlord in that he may be refusing to fix things around the home or may be charging you for bills that you are not directly responsible for. If you are faced with all the above mentioned and more, then moving out may be the right thing for you to do.

Of course moving out of your current apartment will never be just that easy, especially if your landlord has anything to do with it. Retrieving your security deposit that you paid when you initially moved in would always be a factor because both you and your landlord will be vying for the money.

In order to have your security deposit returned, you should try to fix all the plumbing and other broken fixtures and the like that may have gone bad because of you. Experts advised that you should at least pay to have the apartment repaired an entire month before you move out.

Cover or fill up all the old holes that you put in the walls to hold up your pictures. Similarly repaint or wipe the walls clean if they are dirty and dinged looking. Fix everything that you may need repair before you leave. In that way you will not be held responsible for it, which would lead your landlord to withhold your deposit.

When you are satisfied that the apartment is cleaned, have the landlord come over to make a thorough walkthrough. Insist that the landlord sees every room and every crevice so that the end result would be that the place will be impeccable enough for him to return your deposit. Hire a moving container or storage pods company to hold your stuff during your apartment inspection so the unit is less cluttered.

Since plants carry their fair share of bugs and other diseases, these diseases can be spread to other crops where they may be implanted. Moving indoor houseplants is always the easier to transport. While there are no really big restrictions on moving indoor plants, you will still be advised to properly sterilize the soil that is in the pot. When you transport your indoor house plants you will be expected to grow strictly grow your plants indoors.

Plants are not the easiest things to transport so if you are moving very far away from your current location, you may have to do the unfortunate thing, which is to pass the plant along to someone who would take better care of it. If you are set on taking them along with you, do so in your vehicle since most moving pods companies do not want the hassle of moving something as fragile as your plants. The move will come smoother if you transport your plants in a plastic container or a pot and as opposed to a ceramic pot.

Even before you move, make sure to take your plants to a nursery where they will check for many things such as mildew and mold, and even bugs before you transport it. It would also be beneficial if you prune your larger plants as well. Plants should be packed last when you move and they should be placed in boxes and fit snugly.

First off, check to see which storage facilities are located closest to where you live. It does no good to rent a storage unit if it is going to take an hour to get there to retrieve something that is stored there.

Is the area well maintained? Is the security adequate? If the facility itself has a neglected appearance, it’s probably a certainty that the units aren’t going to be in much better shape. If you don’t like what you see, go somewhere else then; there are plenty of places out there.

If you are satisfied with the overall appearance of the facility and the unit, then you’re ready to talk about the expense. Because storage pod facilities are so prolific, everyone is going to want your business. So, don’t be afraid to shop around for the best deal. Remember, too, that the larger the unit, the higher the rent. Get the smallest size you can, even if that means doing some ruthless “downsizing”.

Some paperwork is to be expected; however, renting a storage unit should not be as difficult as buying a car. The contract should be easy to read and understand, with little or no fine print. If the paperwork seems excessive, you may want to consider another facility.

Is the owner or manager courteous? If he or she does not care about how you are treated, then they will probably feel the same way about your belongings.

As children grow and change, so, too, will a family’s storage needs. A child will outgrow not only clothing, but beds, furniture, and closet space as well.

Use stackable storage containers whenever possible, but make sure that the things in the containers can be easily gotten to. If a child has to move three boxes to get to the one he or she wants, the possibility that the boxes will be left unstacked may occur.
