D-DAY (OKAY, OKAY, M-DAY)

MOVING DAY! It’s finally here. Everything is packed (hopefully) and loaded or ready to be loaded, the movers (professional or otherwise) have arrived, and it’s time to get out of the old house and get into the new one. And, it arrived a lot sooner than you thought.

Rooms should be emptied one at a time. Once the room is completely vacant, one more check should be made, especially in closets, behind doors, and in secluded corners. Once that is done, the room should be swept, mopped if necessary, or vacuumed, depending on the flooring. The door should then be shut, and everyone informed that that particular room is “sealed”, “cleared”, “empty”, whatever, and there is no need to re-enter that room again.

Keep some spare bags and boxes on hand in case something was missed, or to pack those items that were being used right up until the last minute. Make sure they are labeled properly, and not forgotten.

Important papers and documents should be kept totally separate from packed items that are being loaded. In fact, they should probably go in a separate vehicle with a responsible adult, and carried into the new residence as soon as possible. Additionally, keep out any medical, baby, or other necessary supplies that may be needed during the day.

Ensure that the utilities have been turned off, or that the companies have been notified to turn them off at a certain time. The sooner after the house is vacated, the better, as no one wants to pay for unnecessary electricity, gas, or water.

Try to take some time to just stand in the middle of the old house for just a few minutes and let the memories wash over you. If this causes a few tears, that’s OK. Everyone will understand.

How to Choose an Interstate Moving Company

Moving interstate can run smoothly especially if you are working along a reputable and professional interstate moving company. Unfortunately, good interstate moving companies are indeed hard to find. This business is no doubt an easy one to get into and that’s why there are so many companies such as these that are available.

There will always be those that are trying to fraud you or not honor their original contract with you. These companies would not think twice in changing the delivery dates on you at a moment’s notice nor would they shy away from adding hidden costs to the move.

There are many ways in which you can protect yourself from having this happen to you. You can start by screening a few of your top moving companies that you would like to move you from your old home to your new one. Shopping around will also lock you in to good rates and in touch with more experienced movers as well.

Ask many questions from the top companies that are on your list. When you have received all the answers to your questions, allow the moving representative to outline all of the details of the move that they are going to offer you. Make sure that the price that you are being quoted includes everything from packing materials to the labor as well as setting up your furniture when they get to your new house. All of this information should be detailed and put into writing to avoid any miscommunication.

Some moving companies love to add hidden fees into the contract, especially if they are moving a tenant to a house that may have stairs. Tell your mover up front if you are moving to a second floor apartment or of how many floors they will have to ascend in order to get to your house. By doing this you will almost guarantee to know of how much you are expected to pay without surprises.

THE FINAL LIST—MAKING IT AND CHECKING IT TWICE (OR THREE TIMES IF NECESSARY)

Packing is only a small part of the moving process. There are other things that must be done before everything is completed.

This is another area where a list can be of utmost importance. As each item is completed, it can be checked off. This will ensure that everything that needs to be done has been or will be done.

Arrangements must be made for utility services to begin at the new residence and end at the old residence. If at all possible, both need to occur on the same day.

Change of address forms must be obtained and sent to anyone and everyone who may possibly need the new address. Additionally, arrangements should be made for mail to be forwarded to the new address, at least for a little while.

E-mail is a good way to accomplish this, especially where friends and family are concerned. Those with whom you conduct regular business will probably need to receive an official change of address notice card such as those provided by the Post Office.

Manuals and instruction booklets pertaining to any appliances left in the old house should be put out where they can be seen by the new owners. Additionally, any other information that you think the new owner may need concerning the house should be left in a conspicuous location.

The location and presence of all household items that have been packed, shipped, stored, or otherwise relocated should be accounted for.

Arrangements should be made or have been made to have the address change reflected on any legal documents that may require it. This includes driver’s licenses, passports, visas, etc.

A final inspection should be done of the house or apartment. This will not only ensure that nothing has been left behind or forgotten, but that any requirements necessary for receiving a security deposit refund (if there was one) have been met.

Choosing the Perfect Sized Rental Moving Truck

So you have decided to move into a new home and the important part of the moving process is that you rent a truck to get your furniture and other item from one destination to another.

Deciding the size of the moving truck that you hire is very important since the last thing you would need is to have to only fit half of your possessions in the truck at a time. This will later lead to you making more than one trip to and from your old home to your new, which can prove to be both tiresome and indeed costly.

To avoid all this from happening, you just can’t simply average what you have assuming that it would fit into a certain size of moving van or truck. Most of the times the size of the moving truck’s tray is not as large as one anticipates and that can lead into unwanted problems during this stressful time of your life.

Be resourceful and check online for the many numeric guides that are available at various websites to assist you with choosing the right size truck for your moving needs.
These guides are able to give one an accurate estimate of how big a move truck they may need according to the size of room that they current exist in or even the size of their house.

For instance, you may currently like in a four bedroom home. Your search online at these numeric guides website will tell you that you would need to get a 24 cubic food truck in order that all your items fit in the truck.

As much as you would like to have all your items fit in the truck, it would also be a bad thing to have space left in the movers truck as you move. This can result in getting your items damaged as they slide all over into the open spaces as they are being transported to the new home. Perhaps you can also have a representative from a moving company to come over and estimate the size truck that you may need. They are experienced in this type of business and would be able to help you.
