The EU25 Lags in Terms of Innovation
As reported by HRI, the EU25 countries are still experiencing an innovation gap when compared with Japan, with the U.S. and even with the EU15 countries, according to the 2005 iteration of the European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS). The EIS compares innovation progress of the 25 EU member states with selected other countries, including the U.S. and Japan. In 16 chosen dimensions with comparable data, the gap between the EU25 countries and Japan is large and increasing. Most of this gap is due to measures of USPTO patents (EU25 trails Japan by 26%), triad patents (EU25 trails Japan by 23%) and tertiary education (EU25 trails Japan by 20%).
